MALOU DOBSON

Using varied media, in particular industrial ones, I found myself interested in creating objects and/or situations which alter the space we find ourselves in. In recent works I have made the choice to use new materials while playing with large scale installations, with most of them being site-specific. Expanding on a specific work to turn it into a series of developments has enabled me to go further into an idea, looking beyond its initial outcome and its impact on the viewer and space.

A work like ‘Pool’ and its different variances could exemplify this. Made from metal poles, wood panels, non-treated canvas, nylon and blue acrylic paint, this awkward scaffold-like piece first gained qualities as an object with no more functionality but to occupy space when the paint started to spread all over the floor. It then also happened to be the main actor in an unplanned performance, where the structure interacted with the space in its own unpredicted ways. Essentially when making work, I try to be attentive at creating situations that offer an alternative way to either navigate a specific space or propose new ways to approach the artwork, alternatively other artworks surrounding it.
