SOPHIE BALDWIN

My work concerns the materiality of man-made materials and their detrimental effect on personhood and the wider environment. Through exploring both the flowing organic lines and physical texture of man-made materials and the immersive nature of their materiality, viewers are encouraged to engage physically with my work and reflect on their own position in this narrative. In (Re)cycle I explored the concept of entrapment behind a physical representation of the primary recycling narrative, using a plastic recycling bag provided by my local council. This work criticises the emphasis on the average household to encourage environmental conservation rather than the large corporate entities primarily responsible for our current ecological and environmental crisis. Using physical gestures and filming outside, I was able to create a visceral video piece in which the trapped, nameless person attempts to escape their plastic prison.
